SYDNEY, Australia (ABC News Online, Oct. 1) - Papua New Guinea's police minister says his force is in crisis, with political interference, low wages and poor housing contributing to its decline.
Internal Security Minister Bire Kimisopa has called for better funding and for the recruitment of another 2,000 officers.
After less than two months on the job, Mr Kimisopa says the community no longer trusts its police, blaming poor discipline for the decline.
He says years of political interference, from the appointment of the commissioner down, have destabilized management and affected morale.
Low wages are also affecting loyalty and officers often struggle to be supplied with a uniform.
He says complaints procedures were not working and must be overhauled.
Mr Kimisopa says international support for the police force must continue to help improve its crime-fighting capacity.
