Defence Minister Dr. Jonathan Coleman welcomes a new defense agreement with Timor-Leste, which reflects the strong ties between the two countries.

"This agreement signifies how our bilateral relationship has matured, and it builds on the close working relationship between the NZ Defence Force (NZDF) and the Falintil Forcas de Defesa Timor-Leste (F-FDTL)," Dr Coleman says.

The Timor-Leste Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Dr Jose Luis Guterres, and Dr Coleman, today signed a Status of Forces Agreement setting out the legal basis for NZDF activities in Timor-Leste and vice-versa. Previously, an individual agreement was required for each activity.

Kiribati will soon enjoy improved environmental health surveillance and response to climate sensitive health risks. This follows an agreement reached between the Secretariat of the Pacific Community and the Government of Kiribati. The € 0.5 million (approx. AUD 0.72 million) health sector support for Kiribati will be delivered through the Global Climate Change Alliance: Pacific Small Island States project (GCCA: PSIS) funded by the European Union (EU).

The project will be implemented by the Ministry of Health and Medical Services (MHMS) in Kiribati with the support of SPC’s Strategic Engagement, Policy and Planning Facility and Public Health Division.

From 27-29 June 2013, governments of Pacific Island States, including those affected by WWII ordnance, will join Australia, Japan, New Zealand and the United States, civil society and mine action agencies, to identify a road map for a Pacific free of unexploded ordnance.

The Pacific Regional ERW Workshop is jointly hosted by ICBL-CMC member organization Safe Ground (recently renamed from the Australian Network to Ban Landmines and Cluster Munitions), and the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat with support from AusAID.
