OVER PLUTONIUM SHIPMENTS INTO ACTION

Last week two ships carrying a cargo of dangerous, nuclear weapons --unusable plutonium fuel-- left Britain and France for Japan.

The Pacific Teal and Pacific Pintail are carrying mixed-oxide (MOX) reactor fuel, made from plutonium and uranium. The shipment is estimated to contain enough fissile material to make 60 nuclear bombs

The ships will sail through the South Pacific. Countries along the route, including South Africa, New Zealand and those that make up the South Pacific Forum, have expressed their concern about the shipment.

South Africa has asked that the ship stay out of its territorial waters and Exclusive Economic Zone. The South Pacific Forum is concerned it has been unable to convince and compel France, Japan and the United Kingdom to begin discussions on a liability regime for compensating the region for potential economic...

INTERNET HOLIDAYS NOT NECESSARILY CHEAPER

Booking holiday flights through the Internet is no cheaper and is often more expensive than using traditional channels, according to leading Pacific travel agents. Far from offering bargain-basement prices due to their claimed low overheads and distribution costs, many net firms appear unable to produce competitive deals.

Sue Moscow of Trailfinders stated that all the media hype about the Internet had led people to believe, incorrectly, that Internet prices are cheaper than those charge by ordinary travel agents.

APIA, Samoa (July 30, 1999 – PACNEWS)---There’s a new twist in the case of the assassination of Samoa Minister of Public Works Luagalau Levaula Kamu. The man charged with Luagalau’s murder is the son of another Cabinet minister.

Yesterday, it was revealed in court that Eletise Leafa Vitale, a 34-year old man from the Malie village, is the son of the Minister of Women's Affairs Leafa Vitale.

Leafa was Minister of Public Works under former Prime Minister Tofilau Eti Alesana, before taking over the Ministry of Post Office and Telecommunications. He was demoted to his current portfolio in a Cabinet reshuffle when Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi became Prime Minister late last year.

The alleged murderer, Eletise Leafa Vitale, was refused bail when he appeared in court yesterday and has been placed in custody. He will reappear again in court on August 6.

Police have not recovered the weapon used in the fatal shooting and are continuing to comb the area...
