The last drop was sold out by lunchtime yesterday.
In their haste to be refilled, cars lined the driveway and spilled onto the highway at the Mobil service station at the junction of Kagamuga.
But most of them were unlucky. Besides motorists, the general public is bracing for a tough time ahead.
Collins & Leahy, one of the major retail and wholesale operators in the region said if the Zumin Bridge near Lae -- which was washed out following heaving rains and flooding last week -- is not up by the weekend, it will face serious problems with its stocks.
Highlands poultry farmers have already looked for alternative feeds for chickens.
Dodi Enriquez, regional manager of Chemica, said their stock feed supply ran out yesterday.
It is also understood that other suppliers are facing similar problems.
