HONIARA, Solomon Islands (November 2, 1997 - PACNEWS)---The Solomon Islands National Union of Workers has started providing food to the 391 former employees of the Malaysian logging company, Earth Movers Solomon, Limited, who were dismissed October 9.
The workers at the logging camps in Western, Guadalcanal and Isabel provinces were fired after going on strike over their demand for a wage increase.
The trade union's general secretary, Tony Kagovai, says while the company has indicated it would evict the dismissed workers and their families, it has still not done so. But Kagovai says since the workers have not received any pay for the last month, the union felt obliged to step in and help by providing them with food.
He says the union is being assisted by members of the International Trade Secretariat, which has offices in Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur, and Brisbane.
