CANBERRA, Australia (December 1, 1997 - PACNEWS)---More members of the Truce Monitoring Group (TMG) have arrived in greater Bougainville.
There are now 125 Australian and New Zealand troops, all unarmed, based on Buka Island, just off shore from the northern tip of embattled Bougainville Island.
During the next few days they will start setting up their headquarters at Arawa in central Bougainville.
This week, the Australians and New Zealanders will be joined by representatives from Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu.
The TMG has the task of ensuring the two-month truce holds in the lead up to the leaders' summit in Wellington, New Zealand in late January.
The various parties involved in the almost ten-year Bougainville conflict have pledged to provide all possible assistance to TMG members, as well as ensuring their safety.
