MAJURO (June 30, 1997 - PIDP/CPIS) ---The Rainbow Warrior, flagship of the Greenpeace environmental organization, has arrived in Majuro, capital of the Marshall Islands, after a two-week sail from Honolulu.
The ship will participate in Greenpeace's current Pacific Campaign, which has as a primary mission to discourage development of proposed nuclear waste storage and disposal facilities in the Marshall Islands and other Pacific Islands areas.
Last week, as a result of Pacific-wide pressure, RMI President Imata Kabua announced in Washington that a nuclear dump feasibility study, awarded the American firm of B & W Nuclear Environmental Services, Inc., had been "frozen," and would not proceed at this time.
Meantime, Greenpeace Pacific Campaign Coordinator, Bunny McDiarmid, who also now is in Majuro, plans to participate in a public debate of the nuclear storage and disposal issue with Marshalls Minister of Resources and Development, Jiba Kabua.
