HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Islands Broadcasting Corp Jan. 4) – The Solomon Islands Government has appointed a committee to look at ways of assisting Asian Tsunami victims.
A 16-member Asian Tsunami Support Committee met for the first time today.
The Government Communication Unit says the committee is made up of people from Government, Non-government, Civil Society and Government Statutory Authorities.
The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat recently approved grant assistance totaling SI$80,000 (US$10,896) to the Forum Dialogue Partners directly affected by the devastating Indian Ocean Earthquake and Tsunami - India, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand.
Solomon Islands is a member of the 16-member nation Forum Secretariat in the Pacific.
East Timor, a small poor country, has contributed about US$400,000 towards the emergency fund and Japan about JPY$4 billion (US$38,955,980).
