SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, Jan. 3) – Airports Fiji Limited is to start FJ$20 million [US$11.5 million] projects to upgrade Fiji’s major airports in April.
Company chief executive Sakiusa Tuisolia said the Nadi, Nausori and Savusavu airports would be upgraded.
[PIR editor’s note: Nadi and Nausori are located on Viti Levu island in Fiji – on the west coast and east coast respectively; Savusavu is on Vanua Levu’s southern coast.]
This will include construction of new terminals and control towers.
Mr. Tuisolia said for Nausori Airport, a new control tower would cost Airports Fiji Limited FJ$1.5 million [US$866,000].
"The terminal will receive maintenance work, which will cost close to FJ$1 million [US$577,000]. Work begins towards the second half of the year," Mr. Tuisolia said.
He said renovation work and the huge amount of money used on upgrading was the result of urgent need to change runway material used at the airports.
