Recent Fiji Flooding Worst Ever To Hit Ra

Flooding associated with tropical depression 04F was the biggest ever experienced in Ra, says Barotu Valley Farmers Association president Ashok Kumar. He said torrential rainfall resulted in crops being washed away and landslides at farms in Barotu, on the outskirts of Rakiraki Town. Mr Kumar said all 23 members of his organisation had been affected by the recent disaster.

PNG's Capital District Police Superintendent Bashed By Soldiers On New Year's Day

NCD Metropolitan Superintendent Ben Turi was assaulted during the New Year operations on Sunday morning. Several rounds were fired around the vicinity of the Boroko Police Station in a confrontation between the PNG Defence Force and the Police. The reasons behind the confrontation was the apprehending of a PNGDF Captain who had been doing a private escort while armed with a pistol, he was stopped at a road block near Taurama and upon being searched, he was disarmed and taken to Boroko. He was reported as being intoxicated and had cocked his firearm and pointed it at the police officers at the road block.

Russian Claims Kiribati Grants Permission To Reestablish Romanov Empire On Vacant Islands

A Russian monarchist says the Kiribati government has agreed to allow three uninhabited islands in the Southern Line Islands to become the site of a revived Romanov empire. Anton Bakov, a businessman and the founder of Russia's Monarchist Party, said the project involved setting up the capital on Malden Island, where he planned to build hotels. The proposed empire also includes Caroline Island and Starbuck Island.

Crew Of Impounded CNMI Vessel Seeks $200,000 In Unpaid Wages

The former captain and six crewmembers of cargo ship M/V Luta are now demanding from the vessel’s owner $199,147.77 in unpaid wages. The ex-crewmembers amended their complaint yesterday to change the demand for payment of wages from $183,647.77 to $199,147.77. The amended complaint only changed the demand for wages of ship captain Michael Brochon to $39,400 and not $36,400, and for the wages of chief engineer Henry Heister to $46,500 and not $34,000 as earlier sought.

Belgium Deputy Prime Minister Makes Official Visit To Fiji

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama yesterday received the deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Belgium, Didier Reynders. Mr Reynders paid a courtesy visit to Mr Bainimarama in his office. PM Bainimarama while welcoming Mr Reynders to the country said that Fiji values highly the long-standing friendship and co-operation it shares with the government and people of the Kingdom of Belgium. Mr Reynders also met with the Assistant Minister for Health Alex O’Connor and the Minister for Industry and Trade, Faiyaz Koya.

Tonga's New Government Building Nearing Completion

Tonga's new government office block, St George Palace at Pangai Si’i, is emerging from its scaffolding wraps in the Nuku’alofa Central Business District, as constuction nears completion. The building is scheduled to be completed within 20 months from when construction started at the end of August 2015. The $25 million Pa’anga [US$11 million] three storey building, a gift from the People’s Republic of China was an initiative of King George Tupou V who died on 18 March 2012.

Guam Legislature Approves New Rules; Money Can't Change Hands In Senate Offices

The new Legislature has new rules, including prohibiting money from changing hands in a senator's office, and rejecting any borrowing bills that aren't for capital improvement projects. The 34th Guam Legislature has gotten off to a rocky start, as one senator has taken issue with some of the changes to the Legislature's standing rules. The standing rules are a set of bylaws that govern the legislative body from term to term. It’s not uncommon for senators-elect of the incoming majority party to change the rules prior to inauguration.

Six Manus Asylyum Seekers Arrested For Drunk, Disorderly Conduct

Following the recent issue of the three Iranian asylum seekers being held by police in Manus, another three refugees have been arrested and charged by police on Monday night. The three men were arrested and charged for drunk and disorderly behavior and causing nuisance on a public street in Lorengau township. Provincial Police Commander Senior Inspector David Yapu said the three were arrested and locked up in police cells. Mr Yapu said he will not tolerate such behavior and nonsense from foreigners stressing that the law is for everyone to abide by and not to be abused.

American Samoa Governor Welcomes Public To Second Inauguration

Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga and Lt. Gov. Lemanu Peleti Mauga have extended a public invitation to the people of American Samoa to the inauguration ceremony for their second four-year term in office. The ceremony is slated to start at 11:30a.m. today at the Malaeoletalu in Fagatogo. “This event has been made possible by your vote of confidence, faith and trust” in the Lolo and Lemanu Administration to continue to serve in the next four years, Lolo said in a brief statement issued last Friday.

New Fiji Land Law Implicated In Low Offering Price For Freehold Land

A plot of freehold land has gone on sale in Fiji for $US5 an acre as an amended land law starts to bite. Under the Land Sales Act, foreign landowners who failed to build a $US120,000 house by the end of last year have to pay either a fine every six months which is equal to 10 percent of the value of their land or risk being jailed. Realestate Fiji has now listed 1.8 hectares of oceanview land on Koro Island for less than $US10.
