American Samoa Congresswoman, Governor Meet U.S. Secretary Of State Tillerson

Congresswoman Aumua Amata met with Secretary of State Rex Tillerson during his second stopover in Pago Pago over the past few days to discuss some of the pressing issues facing American Samoa. Also participating in the historic meeting were Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga and Lt. Gov. Lemanu Peleti Mauga.

“It was very successful meeting,” stated Amata. “The Governor and I discussed issues pertaining to the Pacific, American Samoa, and the United States’ commitment to the region. This is the second high-profile visitor that American Samoa has welcomed in the past few months, which demonstrates just how receptive and involved the new administration is in regards to the territories… a welcome change,” continued the Congresswoman.

Among the topics discussed were, the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), the need for improvements to LBJ Hospital...

Young Researchers Work With Pacific Teens To Break Cycle Of Obesity, NCDs

Four young Pacific health researchers are working with Pacific teens and their communities to help break the intergenerational cycle of obesity and other non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The research builds on an ambitious international project that empowers teenagers to use scientific evidence, community and cultural knowledge to lift their own and their family’s health.

Five Percent Of Zika Cases In U.S. Territories Resulted In Birth Defects

In the U.S. territories, 5 percent of women who had confirmed Zika virus infection during pregnancy had a baby or fetus with Zika virus-associated birth defects, according to a report published this week in CDC’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Among the women with confirmed Zika infection during the first trimester, 8 percent or nearly 1 in 12 had a baby or fetus with Zika virus-associated birth defects. This report, the first from the US territories, represents the largest number of completed pregnancies with laboratory confirmation of Zika virus infection to date.

On June 13, Mrs. Faustina K. Rehuher-Marugg took her oath of office as the Minister of State and the newest member of President Tommy E. Remengesau, Jr.’s Cabinet. With a wealth of experience in public service, the preservation of Palau’s heritage and history through her roles as Minister of Community and Cultural Affairs, and as Director and Curator of the Belau National Museum, President Remengesau expressed confidence that Minister Rehuher-Marugg will work diligently to represent the Republic of Palau in international forums, both inside and outside of the Republic.

Cook Islands Leads Way With $700,000 In Readiness Funding From Green Climate Fund

The government has been approved approximately US$700,000 ($965,000) from the Green Climate Fund to carry out readiness activities for 24 months. In a joint announcement with the Green Climate Fund National Designated Authority (NDA), the government said it was extremely pleased about the funding. The Cook Islands was the first country in the Pacific region and the first Small Island Developing State to receive readiness funding to strengthen capacity to access finance through GCF in March 2016.

U.S. Interior Department Approves $3.5 Million For Renewable Energy In Territories

U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke informed American Samoa Gov. Lolo Moliga, Guam Gov. Eddie Calvo, and Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands Gov. Ralph Torres that he has approved a total of $3,489,427 in energy grants for their respective territories. The secretary and the governors were attending the Western Governors Association meeting in Montana. In addition the secretary announced energy grants for the U.S. Virgin Islands.

High Level Delegation From China Talks Fisheries With Cook Islands

A high level foreign affairs and fisheries delegation from Guangdong Province, People’s Republic of China, visited the Ministry of Marine Recourses (MMR) office this week. Deputy Director General, Foreign Affairs Office People’s Government of Guangdong Province, Su Caifang led the delegation. Members of the delegation included representatives from the Guangdong People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries.

Yap Cultural Delegation, Headed By Governor Ganngiyan, Performs In China

The Yap cultural delegation headed by Tony Ganngiyan, governor of the state, gave its first performance on Tuesday, July 4, 2017, at the Zhongshan Youth Palace as part of the Zhongshan and Yap Cultural Exchange. The theme of the two-hour long cultural exchange was “Join Hands For A Brighter Tomorrow,” offering live cultural displays and performances by both sides. Zhongshan performers included singers, dancers, kungfu fighters and musicians. The Yap delegation did a local attire display for men showing the various thuw ensembles from boyhood to manhood. Likewise, the girls displayed the women’s traditional grass skirt attire from girlhood to womanhood.

China Contributes $1 Million To Forum Secretariat Cooperation Fund

The People’s Republic of China has continued its support to the region through the China-Pacific Islands Forum Cooperation Fund with $1.05 million being handed over last Friday to the Forum’s secretary general, Dame Meg Taylor. “The Pacific region is grateful for the strong relationship we have with China and their ongoing support through this fund,” said the Dame Meg during the handover.

CNMI Receives Another $4.5 Million For Typhoon Soudelor Recovery

U.S. Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan announced that the commonwealth is receiving $4,518,008 more in federal funds as part of the Typhoon Soudelor recovery effort. The money will be used to install 12 generators to provide emergency back-up power to 91 wells and keep water service available to all villages on Saipan after a storm.
