AUCKLAND, New Zealand (March 5, 2002 – Agence France-Presse)---Polynesia’s last kingdom, Tonga, will hold general elections Thursday.
Among the issues are a mythical gold treasure, an errant court jester, high level corruption and a fragile economy.
Unlike other elections around the world this week, there will be no international observers or much interest, as the ballot will not change who rules the 104,000 commoners of what English explorer James Cook called "The Friendly Isles."
King Taufa‘ahau Tupou IV, 83, has held nearly absolute power since becoming ruler in 1965 and the constitution allows the elite to stack the 30-seat Parliament, housed in a quaint wooden walled church-like building.
