MELBOURNE, Australia (Radio Australia, Feb. 28) - Efforts are underway to help restore communication links with Nauru.
The Pacific island has effectively been isolated from the outside world following the collapse of its phone system in early January.
A technician from the Australian relief agency, AusAID, is expected to arrive on the island today, along with special high frequency amplifiers to repair the problem.
AusAID's assistant director-general, Margaret Thomas says restoring communications is the first priority.
Meanwhile, the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat and New Zealand say they have not received any official requests for help from Nauru.
Nauru's president, Bernard Dowiyogo, has described the country's financial situation as critical and he's appealed to donor countries for help.
New Zealand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says no formal approach has been received.
