PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (Samoa News, Dec. 22) - Gasoline prices increased slightly for local motorists, with a higher increase seen in jet and diesel fuel according to the latest government Maximum Allowable Price (MAP).
"It's not so good news for us with the increase of fuel prices," said Sione Kava of the Office of Petroleum Management (OPM).
He said the price increase is due to a combination of things, such as the war in Iraq, the continued conflict in the Middle East, and "we are now heading into the driving season when it's up."
Another contributing factor said Kava, is the hike in transportation prices with older tankers taken out of service, and oil suppliers upgrading their fleet to meet new regulations.
"And these are all circumstances that are beyond our control," said Kava in a telephone interview late last week.
