HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Pfnet, April 27) - A high level mission of the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) is visiting Honiara.
RAMSI, in a statement, said that the visiting delegation will be in the capital today until April 30 to discuss ways to strengthen the accountability institutions in Solomon Islands.
It adds that corruption and mismanagement have slowed economic growth and investment, reduced tax revenue, distorted government expenditure and reduced the effectiveness of foreign aid.
It continues that Solomon Islands' accountability institutions need more resources, support and a strong legislative basis to deal with corruption effectively.
The accountability institutions include the Leadership Code Commission, Ombudsman's office and Auditor General.
RAMSI says one possible way forward is to strengthen existing institutions and look at ways to enhance coordination.
