HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, June 6) – Tension is high between two tribes in West Are’Are in Malaita Province, Solomon Islands, over alleged illegal logging operations in the area.
A concerned chief from the area, who wished to remain anonymous, said certain members of Hanuarua and Hahorarumu tribes are not on good terms.
This follows the alleged spearheading by lawyer, Andrew Nori, to allow a logging company - Oceans Trading company - to operate in the area.
The chief told Solomon Star that the area that was logged does not have a timber right.
A court challenge has been filed but a decision is yet to be reached.
"Despite the court challenges, operations in the area still continue and recruitment of workers is continuing," the Are’Are Chief claims.
He alleged that Andrew Nori had left on Wednesday to Waisisi to employ some people to clear the area for logging and allow work to go ahead.
