Speech
The following is a speech given by Marshall Islands representative Jiji Jally in Seattle on April 14, 2007, where thousands gathered for a climate change rally.
Congressman Inslee, Executive Sims, Mr. Mayor, Reverend Domke, Ladies and Gentlemen:
It is an honor to join you here today as a person with many different perspectives about climate change:
As a citizen of the Marshall Islands I have concern that my country, which hovers just 7 feet above sea level, could go under water.
As a Marshallese, I worry about the social injustice of the poor and developing people in the world suffering much more of the hardship linked to climate change.
As a mother of 6, I have no choice but to focus on what is possible, and what we can achieve. I refuse to quit working on this issue because I will do my part to ensure my children inherit the best possible world to live in.
My country is a tiny country. It has just 70 square miles of land....
