APIA, Samoa (Samoa Observer, June 4) – Concern is mounting that the dreaded cane toad has gained a foothold in the country after confirmation yesterday that one more was found at the gate of the Le Alaimoana Hotel late last week.
Earlier in the month one was reportedly found at Samoa College, Vaivase.
Assistant Chief Executive Officer of Quarantine Division, Asuao Kirifi Pouono, has spoken to government newspaper, The Savali, of their increasing concern at the number of sightings of cane toad reported to their office.
Quarantine has issued an alert.
Le Alaimoana Hotel, at Matautu-uta issued one of it’s own via email, which said:
"Dear All, Please be advised that a live cane toad was found this morning, Wednesday 30th May 2007, and taken to the Quarantine Office – MAF."
Along with the text was a "WANTED" posture for the amphibian put out by Quarantine.
The discovery was made by a security guard.
