SAIPAN, CNMI (Marianas Variety, Oct. 3) – Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands auto dealers sold 495 new cars, vans, trucks and sports utility vehicles in the first nine months of the year, a 40 percent drop from the 825 units sold during the same period last year.
In September alone, new vehicle sales dropped by 20 percent or from 65 to 52, the latest data from the Commonwealth Auto Dealers Association shows.
Douglas Brennan, secretary of Commonwealth Auto Dealers Association, yesterday said the factors contributing to a low consumer demand for vehicles have not changed since the last reporting period, and include the drop in tourist arrivals, the closure of garment factories and ancillary businesses, and the Commonwealth Utilities Corp.’s increased power rates.
