PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (Oct. 30) - Revelations of the heavy reliance of Papua New Guinea on foreign donors for the funding of the nation's public health system should be a real concern to all political leaders of this country -- regardless of where they sit in the National Parliament.

It is not an issue that anyone should take advantage of to score political points against the Government or the Minister for Health. The issue is far more serious and deserves a responsible approach to how best to deal with it in the best interests of the people of Papua New Guinea -- especially women and children.

Health is the number one issue for PNG. It is the most critical issue facing the nation and deserves to be dealt with in a way that ensures this nation takes control of the funding of its public health system. AWARENESS MITIGATES DIABETES ON GUAM

HAGATNA, Guam (Oct. 31) – Diabetes is one of the largest medical problems facing Guam.

The Guam Diabetes Association estimates that at least 40,000 island residents have the disease – that's more than 25 percent of Guam's population.

About 7 percent of the U.S. population has diabetes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The high local rate of diabetes also makes it one of the top killers on Guam. Since 1985, the disease has consistently ranked as one of the island's Top 10 leading causes of death. In addition, diabetes can lead to blindness, kidney damage and poor circulation, which can lead to amputation.

One of the best ways to mitigate the impact of diabetes on Guam is to educate residents about how to best manage and live with the disease. There is no cure for diabetes, but it can be treated.

U.S. COAST GUARD SEARCHES FOR MISSING YAP BOYS

Unites States Coast Guard Office of Public Affairs Hagatna, Guam Oct. 30, 2007

On Monday, October 29th, Coast Guard Joint Rescue Sub-Center (JRSC) Guam received notification that two boys, 13 and 16 years old, had not returned after departing for a fishing trip off Satawal Island in Yap State in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) on Sunday.

They had set sail in a 16 foot outrigger canoe and planned to return to Satawal the same day.

Small local craft have been searching without success.

A Coast Guard C-130 airplane from Barbers Point, Hawaii, joined the search on Tuesday and will search approximately 3,000 square miles today. The aircraft plans to continue searching tomorrow if the boat is not found. A Navy P-3 Orion aircraft plans to join the search today.

The FSM patrol boat FSS Independence is departing Chuuk today to join the search.

TIME NAMES PALAU’S REMENGESAU WORLD ‘HERO’

Palau President Tommy Remengesau has found an international spotlight in a special annual issue of Time Magazine this month highlighting "Heroes of the Environment."

"We call the men and women on the following pages heroes, but they could just as easily be called speakers for the planet, a planet that is hanging, as one of them put it years ago, in the balance," says the article.

Remengesau shares the spotlight with former U.S. Vice President Al Gore, former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev and other luminaries in the select 45-member group.

The article notes that Palau, like many other Pacific countries, is already feeling the effects of global warming and its associated sea level rise.
