Rental, utility assistance discontinued
By Alfred Sasako HONIARA, Solomon Islands (Solomon Star, June 1, 2010) – The Government is believed to have tightened the screws on spending; slashing other charges by as much as 35 per cent on assistance it once paid to public servants.
Other charges include, rental assistance, electricity and water charges, sources said last night.
Thousands of public servants would be affected.
Sources said public servants who until now had been receiving government assistance in rental and other utility charges such as electricity and water for many years will be affected.
"The cut is right across the board and is effective from the beginning of this month," once source said.
It is not clear whether public servants have been informed of the move, which some say is intended to save costs to pay for the national general election due on August 4.
