Approximately 50% of crops, $4 million lost
By Samisoni Nabilivalu SUVA, Fiji (Fiji Times, Feb. 7, 2012) – The Agriculture Department's extension services director, Uraia Waibuta, says the final cost of damage to the agricultural centre in the Western Division is FJ$7.2 million [US$ $4 million].
"Ra and Nadroga each suffered 10 percent in damage to their crop areas -- they were the least damaged provinces," Mr. Waibuta said.
"Ba was the most badly affected by the flood. The flood had an immediate negative effect on agricultural production. Ba suffered an 80 percent loss amounting to FJ$5.3 million [US$ 3 million] in terms of agriculture.
"Surrounding districts like Tavua, La¡utoka and Nadi suffered extensive damage, in particular districts close to Ba Town."
Mr. Waibuta said overall, food security crops suffered 50 percent damage while income-generating crops suffered 50 percent in damage.
