The fourth President of the Federated States of Micronesia is Jacob Nena.

Former FSM Vice President, and Acting President since last November, Nena was sworn in to the Federated States of Micronesia's highest office last Thursday morning during a brief, low-key ceremony in the capital of Palikir.

The 55-year-old Nena, the first elected Governor of his native state of Kosrae, replaces the ailing Bailey Olter, who suffered a stroke last July and was unable to return to his Presidential duties after an officially-designated 180-day recuperation period. As a result, the powers and duties of the FSM presidency automatically transferred to former Vice President on May 8.

President Nena is a graduate of the University of Guam, having majored in political science. A former East-West Center grantee, the new FSM President received a Master of Arts degree from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in public administration and business management in 1972.
