PALIKIR (June 15, 1997 - PIDP/CPIS) ---"Sustainable Development in the Pacific Islands" is the subject of a regional conference now underway in Pohnpei, the capital island of the Federated States of Micronesia.

Delegates from American Samoa, Belau, Guam, the Marshall Islands, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the United States, as well as the FSM, will consider such matter as long-term Pacific ecological, economic, and social sustainability during the week-long series of meetings and field visits, June 16 - 21.

Over 150 government and NGO representatives are participating in the sessions, sponsored by the United States Environmental Protection Agency.

The goal of the conference is to develop projects that will assist achieving sustainable development in the US Pacific insular areas and Freely Associated States. A "Call for Action" report will be published following the conference, with recommendations for implementing specific sustainable development projects.
