WASHINGTON (June 28, 1997 - PIDP/CPIS) ---The public school systems of American Samoa and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands have been awarded grants totaling over US$355,000 to improve computer facilities.

The funding is being provided by the US Department of Education's Literacy Challenge Fund in Washington.

Samoa's grant of $240,930 will be used to provide students with CD-ROM capability and worldwide Internet access.

The primary uses of the new computers in the CNMI schools --on the islands of Saipan, Rota, and Tinian--will be for Internet access and e-mail correspondence.
