HONIARA (July 11, 1997 - PACNEWS)---A border treaty between the Melanesian neighbors of Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands was signed in the Solomons capital of Honiara Thursday by PNG Foreign Minister Kilroy Genia and his Solomons counterpart, David Sitai.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Sitai said the agreement will benefit both countries in their efforts to administer quarantine, customs, immigration and other laws.

PNG's Genia gave assurances that the PNG government is fully committed to ensuring the immediate implementation of the agreement.

The agreement also effectively endorses official recognition by the Solomon Islands that the embattled island of Bougainville is an integral part of Papua New Guinea.
