HONIARA (July 14, 1997 -PACNEWS)---Solomon Islands Prime Minister Solomon Mamaloni, who also is leader of the National Unity Party, will run in the August 6 general election as an independent candidate.

According to the Electoral Commission Office, other MP's in the Mamaloni government also have registered as independent for next month's election contests, noting apparent voter dissatisfaction with the party's achievements.

Mamaloni and his MP colleagues are reported to have an understanding, however, to join together under the National Unity Party banner and form the next government, if a sufficient number of candidates win in the general election.

Meantime, Chief Electoral Officer John Babalu says candidates in contention for the 50 seats in the Solomon Islands Parliament now total 332. Among them are 14 women.
