PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (July 31, 1997 - PACNEWS)---Papua New Guinea's Department of Health estimates that 10,000 - 15,000 people in the Melanesian country now are infected with the HIV virus.

The manager of the HIV/AIDS Prevention Program at the Institute of Medical Research, Joe Anang, says the actual number of people who are HIV positive in Papua New Guinea is not known accurately, and may be higher than official reports.

Anang warned that if no action is taken to educate people about how HIV/AIDS is contracted, and the precautions persons should take to prevent infection, the number of persons in PNG carrying the virus will only continue to rise.
