HONIARA, Solomon Islands (July 31, 1997 - PACNEWS)---The next Solomon Islands national census, originally planned for June of next year, now has been postponed to November, 1998.

Acting government statistician, Nicholas Gagahe, says implementation of the project is being delayed almost half a year because funding for the census, by a European Union Development Fund committee only recently was approved.

Gagahe says the European Union now has authorized financial support totaling $2.1 million (US) for the project.

Next year's national census in the Solomon Islands will take place 12 years after the previous one, which was conducted in 1986.
