NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga (August 4, 1997 - PACNEWS)---Tongans --on a per capita percentage basis-- are the most frequent fliers in the Pacific Islands region, according to a report in the Royal Tonga Airlines in-flight magazine, Lulutai.

The report says 18,000 Tongans traveled by air in 1996.

That means 18 percent of the country's population made an overseas flight last year.

The main reasons for international trips are to visit relatives in New Zealand, Australia, Hawaii, and the U.S. mainland.

Other major reasons why Tongans fly frequently include conducting business in other countries, attending overseas schools, and participating in church meetings and sporting events.
