KIRIBATI WOMEN RECRUITED FOR HONG KONG EMPLOYMENT

TARAWA, Kiribati (August 5, 1997 - PACNEWS)---Hundreds of young Kiribati women have visited the Micronesian country's Labor Office to inquire about work in Hong Kong.

The Kiribati government says that more than 500 women have expressed interest in joining the Hong Kong Housemaids Employment project but, so far, only 27 actually have registered.

Although Kiribati women's groups have expressed reservations about the recruitment effort, the Labor Office has given assurances that women recruited will be under strict supervision in Hong Kong. They also will be free to return home, if they wish, prior to the completion of two-year contracts.

The housemaid recruitment project offers a salary of $523 every two weeks, plus a meal allowance of $38 for women who do not eat at their employer's home.

The Hong Kong project's initial goal is to recruit 100 Kiribati women.
