TARAWA, Kiribati (August 8, 1997 - PACNEWS)---Kiribati, Hawaii's closest international neighbor, and Tuvalu have signed a formal Treaty of Friendship.

The treaty, says Kiribati's Secretary for Foreign Affairs Kaburoro Ruaia, deals primarily with transportation services, trade, and visitor arrangements between the two central Pacific countries.

The neighboring nations once made up the British Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony, until they separated in 1977. The Gilbert Islands later became the Micronesian nation of Kiribati while the Polynesian Ellice Islands were renamed Tuvalu.
