MAMALONI RE-ELECTED TO SOLOMON ISLANDS PARLIAMENT

HONIARA, Solomon Islands (August 7, 1997 - PACNEWS)---Solomon Islands Prime Minister Solomon Mamaloni has been re-elected to his parliamentary seat in this week's general elections.

He won by a wide majority in the West Makira constituency over runner-up John Palmer Haga.

Voting results announced by Governor General Sir Moses Pitakaka show that Mamaloni received support from 1,962 voters compared to Palmer's 366.

In other contests, Deputy Prime Minister Francis Saemala was not returned to Parliament.

One-time Prime Minister Ezekiel Alebua came in third in East Guadalcanal. The winner was Johnson Koli.

At this point, with votes still being counted in various parts of the Melanesian country, it is not at all clear who will lead the next Solomon Islands government.

Parliament's election of the next Prime Minister is expected to take place August 27.
