PORT VILA, Vanuatu (August 24, 1997)--- During the past three months, tourist arrivals in Vanuatu have increased 5.2 percent compared to the same period last year.

According to a report from the Vanuatu Office of Statistics, the three-month total was 12,618 visitors.

Most tourists during the quarter came from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Europe.

The Vanuatu government report noted a decline in the number of visitors from North America and Pacific Islands countries and territories, particularly neighboring New Caledonia.

Cruise ship arrivals also decreased, primarily because of the end of service to Vanuatu's capital of Port Vila by the Fairstar from Australia.
