ASIAN DEVELOPMENT BANK FUNDING FOR FIJI ROAD IMPROVEMENTS

MANILA, Philippines (August 26, 1997 - Agence France Pressse)----The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said here today that it had approved a $40,000,000 million loan to fund a major road upgrading project in Fiji.

The loan will be used to upgrade and rehabilitate 180 kilometers of roads on four islands and improve road safety in the country, the ADB said in a statement released from its headquarters in the Philippines.

The total cost of the project will amount to $90,000,000 with the Fiji government providing the balance of funding required.

The ADB also will provide a $1,400,000 technical assistance grant to support reforms in Fiji's roads infrastructure, including the reorganization of the public works department, the establishment of a land transport authority, and the implementation of a road safety plan.
