SUVA, Fiji (August 31, 1997 - PACNEWS)---A national conference of Fiji's Methodist Church last week unanimously endorsed a proposal that Fiji be declared a Christian state, but some delegates indicated concern that such a move might conflict with Fiji's new constitution.

Church President Reverend Doctor Ilaitia Tuwere said it would not be correct to rush promulgation of such a sensitive proposal, as it could create division among church members and social unrest within the general Fiji community..
