UN APPOINTS FIJI COMMANDER FOR LEBANON

SUVA, Fiji (August 31, 1997 - PACNEWS)---The United Nations has confirmed the appointment of Fiji's Army Chief of Staff, Brigadier General Jioji Konrote, as the new Force Commander of the UN Interim Force in Lebanon.

In making the appointment, UN Secretary General Kofi Annan also announced that Konrote will be promoted to the rank of Major General before assuming his new post.

Konrote, who has served in the Fiji military since 1966, was trained in Australia and New Zealand as well as Fiji.

He will assume his new duties October 1, succeeding a Major General from Poland.
