PNG COUNCIL APPROVES AID FOR DROUGHT AND

PORT MORESBY, Papua New Guinea (September 5, 1997 - PACNEWS)---The Papua New Guinea National Executive Council has approved $2.8 million in emergency relief funds to assist drought and frost victims throughout the country.

Prime Minister Bill Skate says the funding will begin to be released today to aid severely affected victims.

The Council's action following a request from Simon Kaumi, Provincial Affairs and Local Government Minister.

Prime Minister Skate says over 300,000 people are facing starvation, schools are being forced to close, and there are dangers of outbreaks of diseases as a result of the natural disasters.
