PORT VILA, Vanuatu (September 10, 1997 - PACNEWS)---Vanuatu's controversial Finance Minister, Willie Jimmy, has been sacked by Prime Minister Serge Vohor.

Jimmy received his dismissal letter this afternoon.

His firing is the culmination of a row between the two leaders which came to light when Jimmy unexpectedly announced he was contesting the leadership of the main ruling UMP party against Vohor and former leader Maxime Carlot Korman at the UMP congress in Tanna.

Vohor countered this week by removing three major Jimmy's financial institutions from his portfolio.

Jimmy complained and threatened to resign.

It is believed however, the Prime Minister asked him to resign or be sacked.

A new Finance Minister is expected to be sworn-in shortly, but, Tuesday evening, the Prime Minister's Office would not release the name of the new Finance Minister.
