Heads of the eight-member South Pacific Organizations Coordinating Committee (SPOCC) are meeting today in Rarotonga, Cook Islands to discuss ways of better coordinating regional policy initiatives and development priorities.

The eight regional organizations in SPOCC were established by the South Pacific Forum and other Island Leaders and Development Partners to implement development priorities. The oldest of the agencies is the South Pacific Commission which was set up 50 years ago.

The agenda includes policy reviews of agriculture and information sectors, and inter-agency co-ordination in the marine and health sectors.

A number of administrative issues will also be considered, including the possibility of joint purchase arrangements for air travel within the region in an effort to cut down on travel costs.

Those attending the SPOCC meeting include the heads of the Forum Fisheries Agency (Mr. Victorio Uherbelau); Pacific Islands Development Program (Dr. Sitiveni Halapua); South Pacific Applied Geoscience Commission (Mr. Philipp Muller); South Pacific Commission (Dr. Bob Dun); South Pacific Forum Secretariat (Hon. Ieremia T. Tabai); South Pacific Regional Environment Program (Mr. Tamarii Tutangata); Tourism Council of the South Pacific (Mr. Levani Tuinabua) and the University of the South Pacific (Mr. Esekia Solofa).

SPOCC meetings arc chaired by the Secretary General of the South Pacific Forum Secretariat, Hon. Ieremia T. Tabai.
