AGANA, Guam (September 17, 1997 - PIDP/CPIS)---Korean Air service between Guam and the South Korean capital of Seoul will be discontinued effective October 1, and the airline has no plans to resume already canceled flights to Saipan, in the neighboring Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

The cessation of services is a direct result of the August crash of Korean Air Flight 801, resulting in the deaths of 228 of the 254 crew and passengers aboard, as the plane approached Guam's international airport.

Korean Air officials remain concerned about the safety of the Guam airport facility.

The flight cancellations deal a potentially serious blow to tourist business operations in both Guam and the Northern Marianas.
