HEMPSTEAD, New York (September 25, 1997 - PIDP/CPIS)---The Republic of the Marshall Islands Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Phillip Muller, and the U.S. Ambassador to the Marshall Islands, Joan Plaisted, will be the keynote speakers at a New York meeting October 3 that has the goal of "charting the future of the Marshall Islands."

The director of the day-long symposium, Patrick Mahoney, says major consideration will be given to the Marshalls' recent history "from dependency to freedom."

Among the specific subjects to be considered will be U.S. - Marshall Islands bilateral relations, featuring Marshall Islands Ambassador to the United States Banny Debrum.

International relations will be discussed by Laurence Edwards, Marshall Islands Ambassador to the United Nations.

The October 3 symposium will take place at Hofstra University, near New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, in the New York City suburb of Hempstead.
