TARAWA, Kiribati (September 30, 1997 - PACNEWS)---An acute shortage of food on Kiribati's southern Gilbert Group Beru Island has forced the Rongorongo secondary school to send all boarders home except for students in Forms 3 and 5.

Member of Parliament for Beru, Taomati Iuta, says the Form 3 and 5 students will continue to be accommodated at the school as they are scheduled to take secondary school examinations soon, Radio Kiribati reports.

Iuta says Beru has been without rice and flour for the past four weeks.

The local trading company, Bobotin Kiribati, Limited, says about 300 bags each of rice and flour have been ordered, and these will arrive aboard the local trading vessel, the MV Mataburo, on its next visit.

The ship's precise arrival date has not been announced.
