DIRECTOR LEGISLATION

PALIKIR, Federated States of Micronesia (October 8, 1997 - PIDP/CPIS)--- Legislation passed by the Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia to establish a full-time national election director's office has been vetoed by President Jacob Nena.

The President said "My objection is based on my re-assessment of the need for this legislation at this time."

With aggressive efforts now underway to reduce government expenditures, Nena said "the establishment of a full-time election director and commissioners is not financially justifiable."

In vetoing the legislation, the President said his action should in no way be interpreted to mean that he is not aware of the many election reforms that the FSM needs to implement.
