SUVA, Fiji (October 6, 1997 - PACNEWS)---A new tax on tobacco is expected to be announced during Fiji's 1998 Budget address next month. And Minister of Health Leo Smith says his ministry will have a major role in determining how such taxes collected from tobacco sales are spent, The Fiji Times newspaper reports.

It is anticipated that the special taxes will be used to promote anti-smoking campaigns and to fund rehabilitation programs. Smith says the system will have to be monitored carefully to ensure that it works effectively.

A similar tax on all alcohol sales also is being considered by Fiji government fiscal planners.
