PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (October 9, 1997 - Samoa News)---American Samoa has offered to serve as host for U. S. athletes training for the Olympic Games 2000 in Sydney, Australia.

Lt. Governor Togiola Tulafono has forwarded an invitation to U.S. Olympic Committee President William J. Hybl.

Chief of Staff Dr. Sili Sataua told the Samoa News that the proposal also is associated with American Samoa's celebration of 100 years of association with the United States the same year.

"It would one of the greatest treats for American Samoa," he said.

"As a result of our recent Mini Games, we are blessed with new track and field facilities, and other sports venues that are considered very fine," Lt. Governor Togiola noted in his invitation letter.

"It occurred to me that we may be so situated in the Pacific as to more closely resemble conditions in Sydney where the next Olympics shall be held.

"Accordingly, I thought it would be nice to invite your goodself or your appointees to review these facilities and see if they can be utilized by any of the United States Olympic Team 2000 for training prior to departing for Australia."

The Lt. Governor added that if the U.S. team accepts the invitation it would be a "high honor for this Territory to host any of our great Nation's teams in preparation for these Olympics."
