SUVA, Fiji (October 12 - PACNEWS)---The Fiji government has approved an increase in location allowances for Fiji soldiers on United Nations peacekeeping duties in Lebanon and the Sinai Peninsula.

The current rate of $11 per day will be increased to $14 beginning January 1, 1998, Radio Fiji reports.

However, a cabinet statement says this allowance will be further increased to $17 per day beginning January 1, 1999.

The Fiji government will provide an additional budgetary allocation of $1.2 million to accommodate the 1998 increase and a further $890,000 for 1999.

The allowance is expected to be reviewed again in 2000.
