METER TAMPERERS

APIA, Samoa (November 4, 1997 - PACNEWS)---Samoa's Water Authority has warned consumers that anyone caught tampering with water meters will have their water supply cut off.

Authority spokesman Fui Alatimu says staff members taking their first readings of newly installed meters have discovered that some meters have been disconnected or adjusted to give incorrect readings. Some even had their parts removed, he added.

Fui warned that those found tampering with the meters now not only will have their water supply cut off but also will be fined $225.

The situation is expected to improve, he said, once Samoa's consumers get used to the idea of paying for a ready supply of safe water.

The introduction of water meters to new areas always is met with strong opposition, Fui noted.
