HONIARA, Solomon Islands (November 11, 1997 - PACNEWS)---The Japanese government has denied news reports that it is considering suspending $14 million in aid granted to build a new air terminal at Honiara's Henderson International Airport.

A statement from the Japanese embassy in Honiara says the report earlier this week was "totally groundless."

It says, on the contrary, the terminal building is almost complete, Japan categorically denies the report, and it gives its assurance of continued support for any promised aid project.

Earlier, the Solomon Islands Broadcasting Commission quoted diplomatic sources in Honiara as saying Tokyo was displeased about Honiara's intention to charge a fee for the shipment of nuclear materials through its waters and, as a result, was considering withdrawing aid support for the airport project.
