AUSTRALIA TO FUND HA'APAI AIRPORT EXPANSION IN TONGA

NUKU'ALOFA, Tonga (November 12, 1997 - PACNEWS)---The Australian government has agreed to finance the upgrading and extension of Salote Pilolevu airport on Lifuka Island in Tonga's Ha'apai Group.

The project is projected to cost about $1.5 million, Radio Tonga reports.

Included in the total aid package for Lifuka is a center for women, to be built at a cost of $156,000, and water tanks for several of the isalnd's villages.

The Australian government also is funding water tank construction on other Ha'apai Group islands.
